Cyber Word of the Week: Ports
In cybersecurity, a port is a point where data enters or exits, either physically or logically.
Physical ports are the ones you can see and touch on your computer, like USB ports, HDMI, or Ethernet. These allow physical connections between devices.
Logical ports are virtual points used in networking. They help computers communicate over the internet or local networks. Each logical port is identified by a number (from 0 to 65535) and used by different services and protocols.
Common Logical Ports:
Port 80 – HTTP (web browsing)
Port 443 – HTTPS (secure web browsing)
Port 25 – SMTP (email sending)
Port 22 – SSH (secure remote login)
Port 3389 – RDP (remote desktop)
Why It Matters
Ports are essential for connectivity, but they’re also common attack points. That’s why closing unused ports and monitoring network traffic are crucial parts of cybersecurity best practices.
