Ransomware is one of the most disruptive types of cyberattacks.

It’s a type of malicious software (malware) that locks your files, or even your entire system, and demands payment (a ransom) to unlock them.

 How does it happen?
• You click on a malicious email attachment or link
• The ransomware installs quietly in the background
• Your files are encrypted, and a ransom demand appears

How to protect yourself:
• Avoid clicking suspicious links or downloads (See What Are the Three Types of Hackers? to learn about different attacker motivations)
• Keep regular backups of important files (offline or cloud-based)
• Update your software regularly to patch known vulnerabilities (this is an important part of Defense in Depth)

Ransomware can affect anyone: individuals, small businesses, and even hospitals. Staying informed and vigilant is your best defense.
